What is Sivananda Yoga?

Sivananda yoga is a style of yoga that was created by Swami Sivananda to help introduce yoga to the Western world. Like most styles of yoga, Sivananda yoga relates to all aspects of life, including philosophy and diet. However, a major part of the Sivananda yoga program is a series of asanas or poses.

The basic Sivananda sequence includes warm up exercises, an aerobic opening sequence called a sun salutation, thirteen basic poses, and a period of final relaxation. This program is simple but challenging, and can be adapted to many situations.

The Sivananda yoga routine can be performed in as little as half an hour, although more advanced students may spend longer in each pose and also include variations and other optional poses. With these modifications, the Sivananda sequence is equally appropriate for yogis of all levels.

Sivananda yoga actively recruits teachers because of the desire to spread yoga throughout the world. There are training centers in several different countries, where anyone with a sincere interest, basic level of fitness, and sufficient funds and/or time to volunteer can complete an intensive teacher training course of at least one month, which covers the history and philosophy of yoga as well as the basic sequence of poses. Advanced teacher training courses are also available.

Official Sivananda yoga classes are taught by teachers trained in these centers, and always go through the same sequence of poses, with minor variations.

This is a good piece of intel. I had not heard of Sivananda before reading this, so thank you for bringing it to my attention. The simplicity and the short time requirement seem to make this form of yoga an attractive option for people in our modern busy world.
